Flagger Foils Vandals …

Last night Corey Meyer shared the following on Facebook. I know many of you aren’t on Facebook, so you can click here for the story. Or here, where it apparently originated.

The report states that a VCU student in film studies foiled an effort to deface the Jefferson Davis monument in Richmond.

The report quickly circulated to a number of places, including Kevin Levin’s Civil War Memory. Kevin, as you should know, has protested the defacement of Confederate monuments before, including an incident in Charlottesville. So, like any responsible person looking for something outside of a single report, he looked for other accounts and supporting evidence, including police reports, newspaper accounts, other images … anything.

So far he’s found nothing.

Help Kevin out. This story certainly deserves a lot of attention.

Thanks.

  1. Well, the FB page gives Rob Walker’s email address and asks for congratulatory messages to be sent. I emailed him a friendly note asking him if the story is true. Hopefully he’ll respond. The original report of his heroics notes that he tased one of the vandals repeatedly, so I have to believe a police report was written and medical attention sought.

  2. For what it’s worth I emailed the link to the Film Dep’t at VCU, stating that his connection to the university is prominently displayed in the blog, and that the congratulatory messages are to be sent to his email address at vcu.edu. My daughter is doing her post-doc work at VCU, and I let them know I am disturbed that a club and taser wielding student is enrolled there. I am not convinced this incident actually happened, but I don’t want a student near my child who needs to brag online about clubbing and repeatedly tasing a statue vandal, whether real or fantasy. I imagine universities in this day and age have a zero tolerance policy for violent behavior. I think Mr. Walker and his supporters have opened up a crapstorm.

    • Well cc2001,
Personally, I wished that Rob was toting a 9mm, and that the screwdriver wielding and tree branch waving group of punks would have died violently of lead poisoning. I feel so bad for your child, whose parent is so openly anti-self defense, pro-vandalism, pure hysterical.

God Bless Mr Baker for his actions.

      • First, Billy, get the name straight. Funny that you can’t even remember the name of your newest hero. But I’m sure Rob Baker appreciates your sentiments.

Second, Billy, Mr. Walker would have been in a little trouble had he done as you fantasize. There’s no self-defense issue here, and as for carrying a weapon on campus (remember that he had just returned from VCU), there’s this.

After all, as Susan Hathaway declares, “these punk vandals … have no regard for the rule of law.” It appears you don’t have any respect for the rule of law, either. Are you a Confederate heritage punk? So it seems.

Third, doesn’t it strike you as odd that no report has appeared in the news about this? It isn’t as if Flagger activity has not been publicized before in Richmond. One would think that proud Flaggers would be contacting the local papers and television stations to share this story and give Mr. Walker the recognition y’all say he deserves. Are you folks ashamed of this effort to protect Confederate heritage? Are you embarrassed by it? Is what’s lacking a picture of Susan Hathaway?
