Grant: Reflections on Reconstruction

After his presidency Ulysses S. Grant took a trip around the world.  During that excursion he shared with reporter John Russell Young his views on various issues.  Here is what he said about Reconstruction:

Looking back over the whole policy of reconstruction, it seems to me that the wisest thing would have been to have continued for some time the military rule.
