You may find interesting the reflections of Ulysses Grant Dietz, a direct descendant of Ulysses and Julia Grant, on his ancestor’s reputation through the years. Mr. Dietz, by the way, preceded me by a few years at Exeter. Our paths did not cross then and have not since.
Sounds like he took a class from you 😉
Might he not be an interesting contact for you to make? It sounds like he’s done some thinking on this era.
It’s an interesting call, because one doesn’t want to be seen as the family biographer. Unlike several other recent Grant biographers, for example, I’ve had nothing to do with the Ulysses S. Grant Association, for various reasons.
I have to say that it’s gratifying to see a descendant of Ulysses S. Grant who continues to work for progressive social values such as gay rights and African American rights. Good to see that Grant’s progressive spirit is manifesting in at least some of his descendants.
