More Black Confederates … From the Georgia Civil War Commission

Aware that their claims about Black Confederate soldiers have been challenged, members of the Georgia Civil War Commission were quick to respond on their Facebook page:

Stuff (2)

Unusual “uniform.”

But then there’s also this:

Oh my.  Not Bill Yopp again.

I guess this is what passes for history in some parts.

It appears that the head of the commission is especially interested in this issue.

Okay, i’ll give in at last. Forrest enlisted hundreds of slaves who insisted on taking up arms to save their jobs from the meddling Lincoln. Diabolical Yankees destroyed all of the orders, rosters, letters, journals, and diaries which proved that black Americans flocked to CSA recruiting offices. But first I’m reading this –

That ambrotype was part of an auction ten years ago. Here is how the auction catalog described the item:

A superb portrait, the sitter looks intently at the camera, wearing a 9 button shell jacket, with dark (likely red) epaulets, the collar also trimmed with two bars of dark piping. His pants are tailored from the same coarse cloth, and are seemingly part of a uniform which is worn over a civilian’s checked vest. He sports a large cravat. Judging by his neat appearance, and demeanor, the sitter is likely a Confederate officer’s personal servant. Enslaved African Americans were often conscripted into service to work on construction projects, and free blacks were sometimes empressed [sic.] into the same service. Officer’s slaves sometimes accompanied their masters into the field — we believe this image to be representative of such an individual.

Nice find Andy Hall… The comment you quoted goes on to say,

“An exceptional rarity, and one of approximately six known images of African Americans in Confederate uniform.”

Only SIX known images of African Americans in Confederate uniform?

      Hum….. Interesting…. Very interesting…

Apparently images of dark-complexioned folks didn’t reproduce well under collodion, silver nitrate, pyrogallic acid, and sodium thiosulfate. Now on to all of those missing.rosters, muster rolls, orders, letters, etc. Meanwhile I’m revisiting the conspiracy between LBJ, Walt Disney, and the NFL to off JFK. “History” is great…..
