Is This How Flaggers Support Heritage?

Over at Civil War Memory Kevin Levin picks up on the activities of Matthew Heimbach, who’s become something of a favorite of the Virginia Flaggers. After all, as the prominent Flagger Tripp Lewis reminds us:

Lewis on Heimbach

Perhaps Tripp and his fellow Flaggers can explain the image Kevin’s highlighted:

Heimbach in Alabama

How is the Dexter Avenue Church in Birmingham, Alabama, related to Confederate heritage? How does flagging it honor Confederate soldiers? For more on this church, read this.

The more you learn about Matthew Heimbach, the more you learn about the Virginia Flaggers … and the more you know exactly what heritage they really want to honor.

His support of Afrikaners’s “rights” shows that he is a blatant racist.

But he’s a Flagger … and, so Tripp Lewis tells us, he’s a “nice guy.”

He was running around Towson U wearing Nazi symbol t-shirts! I think that says it right there.
I can get the photo for you guys, just give me a minute or so to dig it up….

Okay, here is Heimbach in the t-shirt:

It is a tribal design mesh of the swastika and a rune the white power crowd has adopted.

His shirt says “Folk and Fatherland” I found a shirt almost like it on a Neo-Nazi retail site called “Aryanwear” It has the same symbol but says “strength in numbers”, but it is pretty evident what his shirt is and what it means.

Here is a link to the similar shirt:

Here is where he scribbled “white pride” in chalk all over the Towson U campus last year:

Interesting reading about Heimbach’s chapter of the YWC at Towson. It turns out that for the 2011-12 academic year, Heimbach had a scholarship from the SCV’s Army of Northern Virginia, that included “monetary renumeration, a certificate and an ANV medal.” So he was on an SCV scholarship when running around campus chalking up “White Pride” and calling for the hanging of Nelson Mandela. Both those events, among others, predate the award of his Distinguished Service Medal from the national organization.

We refer to Heimbach as “the new Bill White”…

What’s next on Heimbach’s White Supremacist Tour of Racist Assassination Spots? The Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN or the 16th St Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL to celebrate murdering children who were preparing for Sunday School?

Look at the photo carefully. Not only is it clearly nighttime but the church itself shows no sign of any activity. He’s posturing like he’s doing something daring but, really, he’s cowardly sneaking up in the dead of night.

I sent Kevin’s column to my friend who was part of the North Carolina SCV contingent that fought so hard against the takeover of the national SCV by Kirk Lyons (who was married at the Aryan Nation’s HQ compound) and his ilk. He responded that that was why, after the Lyons contingent won, they left the SCV, feeling that the new leadership had forgotten the original purpose of the organization: to honor Confederate veterans. He said he shuddered to think what Heimbach’s “distinguished service” was for which Heimbach received the SCV award.

Please don’t give that Virginia Flagger … that “nice guy” … any ideas.

I hadn’t thought about Youth for Western Civilization for a while, but three years ago I was a particular target of their venom. Their web site described me: “Patrick Young is a proud employee of the Treason Lobby.” Their site has closed, but I wrote about their article back then.

They called me out, I responded on their web site, and they deleted my response. Even some of their own members said that was cowardly.

I find the photo absolutely disgusting. As I have written many times before here and elsewhere, if Southerners are upset about the reaction to the CBF, then they need to stop using it in such photo ops as this. If it is truly a symbol of Confederate pride and heritage, then it should be treated as such. “You guys” continue to drag it through the mud and then complain that it doesn’t get the respect it should. Maybe you should start respecting it first and others might follow suit.

I’ve been looking at my old articles on Youth for Western Civilization. My favorite title: “More indignities suffered by the white race!!!!!! As told by the privileged young men who endure them.”

I’ve always thought your most telling observation was in response to Brag Bowling’s complaint about the Lincoln statue in Richmond, when he claimed that it was just like placing a statue of Churchill in Berlin. As you suggested, never indeed offer a comparison that points to parallels between yourself and the Nazis.

      • M.D. Blough September 1, 2013 / 9:42 pm

Patrick (via Brooks)-I love your response to Brag Bowling. Of course, it is a victory in a battle of wits with the unarmed, but it’s still witty.

In the photo, Heimbach conveys the spirit of the Confederacy and its symbols perfectly. I concur with poster over at Kevin’s site who argues that the flag really is being used correctly here. Apparently, the Flaggers and the SCV’s leadership don’t disagree.

It’s not hard to imagine their reaction if they saw a photo of one of us victoriously displaying a Union regimental flag in front of the graves of Confederate war dead.

    • Brooks D. Simpson September 1, 2013 / 10:47 pm

This is not a minor point. I hear all the time about how self-professed sincere advocates of Confederate heritage want to make sure that the flag is not appropriated by hate groups, but then here’s Heimbach doing exactly that, and he’s embraced by the Virginia Flaggers and given awards and a scholarship by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. And what do we see here? A whiny Billy Bearden wannbe who doesn’t seem to give a damn about the “proper” use of the flag. Nor do we hear a peep out of the gift that keeps on giving, the Southern Heritage Preservation Group, despite what you read here.

How is it that the Opposition cannot grasp just how obscene the suggestion is that Southerners, particular Confederate descendants, should effectively surrender the most prominent living symbol of our heritage and Southern identity to racist ideologues who would turn it into the equivalent of an American swastika?

This flag is a memorial to our Southern dead, a link to our bloodline, and the symbol of who we are as a distinct American people. Asking us to surrender to the judgement of the ignorant to serve only to benefit political and racist ideologues is the same as telling us to desecrate our own ancestor’s graves, dishonor our own families, and submit to the shame of letting others define who we are and what being Southern is with our own blessings to that fact.

If there were but one Southern Cross in existence representing who my ancestors were and who I am as an American today, I would rather pull it off the pole and burn it myself rather than allow it to fall in the hands of scum who would wave it to promote hatred towards other Americans and other Southerners. I would not see my ancestors names tarnished so, and I absolutely would not give them my blessing to do it!

Yeah, sure. So where are you now, Carl Roden? Too busy with Hey Arnold?

So … are they cowards, liars, or racists?

“Wherever you find the negro, everything is going down around him, and wherever you find the white man, you see everything around him improving.”

        – Robert E. Lee to Thomas Carter, April 15, 1865

“You will never prosper with the blacks, and it is abhorrent to a reflecting mind to be supporting and cherishing those who are plotting and working for your injury, and all of whose sympathies and associations are antagonistic to yours. I wish them no evil in the world – on the contrary, will do them every good in my power, and know that they are misled by those to whom they have given their confidence; but our material, social, and political interests are naturally with the whites.”

        – Robert E. Lee to R.E. Lee, Jr., March 19, 1868

Spunky- those memes are LULZ! Going to grab a few for later use. Thanx!

The funniest thing here is that the League of the South isn’t even using the Confederate Battle Flag anymore at our events.

    • Brooks D. Simpson September 6, 2013 / 2:01 pm

So I have heard. I think people might be interested in learning the reasoning behind this decision. Thanks.
