    Were not Whigs just National Dem-Republicans after Jackson/Van Buren gave us the Democratic Party? I guess the Great Compromiser and Webster is whom the look to, but their final compromise were not to highly though of and would have been vetoed by Taylor if he had lived.

    Well, that’s interesting. I question whether the outcome (36-24) means much, if anything, or sets a precedent for future Whigs. Had he been running for the state legislature or, even better, the U.S. Congress, it might have sent a message. As it is, it’s just an interesting little anomaly on the political landscape.
