The same observer took pains to single out that favorite of so many Virginia Flaggers, Matthew Heimbach, who argued:

That notion is simply unacceptable to this critic of Confederate heritage advocates.

Never said I was a critic of activists, just how the League is going about it and to call Mathew Heimbach a favorite of the Virginia Flaggers is inaccurate. You seem to take a lot of “creative liberty” with your coverage.

Here’s the real question, however: aren’t the differences between Brad, Michael Givens, Matthew Heimbach, Connie Chastain, and the Virginia Flaggers simply tactical? Do we really think they entertain substantial differences when it comes to core beliefs, including racial attitudes? In fact, Brad’s the only one who has publicly placed some distance between Heimbach and himself, although I hear that Givens claims he does not know who Heimbach is … although we have a photograph to suggest otherwise.
Brooks, I do not think I am going a tinfoil hat place on this when I say all of those people you have listed are connected and related on some level.
The Confederate fetish movement is very much like the dress up neo-Nazi movement.
Both groups have made up fantasies about that certain time period where there was racial inequality and domination.
They both work very hard at creating denial stories about the atrocities that were committed during those time periods.
They both like to dress up and cos play with their childish fantasies about being in those time periods and having that upper racial hand.
On Connie’s website is an ad to “help save white genocide in South Africa”. That campaign was started and is based with Aryan Nations, who BTW fly confederate flags during their rallies.
Other of these so called “flagger/Confederate patriots” support plugs for the Political Cesspool radio show, which is white supremacist.
I do honestly believe that while these “flagger/Confederate patriots” work so hard at their “the war was not about slavery” montra, that slavery is one of the primary attractions for their being in that movement because they want an upper hand in society based on their white skin color.
Heimbach has a genuine interest in European fascism.
I’ve never cared for the WW2 era. I have clashed with Neo-Nazis like Craig Cobb and Greg Johnson for years now.
My own racial and cultural beliefs are derived from growing up in the Alabama Black Belt which has its own traditions.

It was the best news I heard in a long time. The thought of multiple bullets being pumped into the bodies of violent Nazi skinheads was a tiny pay back for the suffering of our family members who had survived the tortures of the Nazi concentration camps, and it made me rejoice.
It was good to see that the people will not allow that kind of evil grow politically and they are taking all measures to stop it.
Are you also going to analyze the connections that Southern Nationalists make with groups like the Vermont Independence Party (Socialist) and the Hawaiian Sovereignty Movement? Most of us could give a tinker’s dam about the “Euro New Right”.
Insofar as the League is concerned, there is far more interest in the European secessionist movements in Flanders, Scotland, and Catalonia. I believe the League itself was inspired by Lega Nord in Northern Italy in the 1990s.
Michael Cushman lived in Spain for several years. He’s still a big fan of Spanish culture. We spent most of 2012 writing about the cultural and historical connections (i.e., the plantation based seigneurial civilization) between the South and the Caribbean and Latin America. Cushman’s recent makeover of the League was inspired by Vlaams Belang.
At the last League conference, there was supposed to be an Afrikaner speaker from South Africa. I know the League is very interested in the fate and welfare of White Rhodesians and South Africans. There are obvious parallels between the South and Southern Africa.
WNs are far more interested in Vladimir Putin and Golden Dawn than the League. When Golden Dawn was generating a lot of excitement among WNs, the League was more interested in the huge rallies and secession vote going on in Catalonia.
I think it is crazy to kill anyone for ideological reasons.
That’s one of the reasons why I have always taken such a dim view of Europe. There dozens of abstract ideologies over there which have ripped apart the traditional social fabric. Fascism is one example. There are many others going back to the French Revolution.
I can’t think of anyone in the history of the “movement” who has made a bigger fool out of himself than Craig Cobb. That said, I don’t put much stock in the DNA test results. If it had come from a reputable company like 23andMe, I would believe it.
Brad, I think it is entirely possible Cobb has a mixture of other races, there is no such thing as a pure race, especially in America. Cobb is a crackpot and a fool, but there are others who have done a good job of making themselves fools and crackpots.
There was Vonnie, Schoep, McBride, Herrington and of course John De Nugent, not to mention all the hilarity and antics from Overthrow.com. I could continue the list and go on and on, because the reality is it is a movement of crackpots and fools on various levels.

Needless to say, we thought speaking at the NSM rally was a terrible idea from the beginning. Dr. Hill pressured him not to do it. He decided to go ahead and do it anyway though. We didn’t know it was a “Kristallnacht” commemoration rally either until the media explained why they chose that date.
As for the swastika burning with the “Aryan Terror Brigade,” no one had any idea he had done that either until the ADL published the photo on their website. That’s why he was kicked out of the League and told not to come to the Murfreesboro rally.
The Matts do what they want to do. That’s all there is to it.
It seems this is all about optics. Everybody still wants to be friends, but no one wants anyone to know they’re still friends. There have been quite a lot of statements from certain people about how this or that it “looks bad”, and being associated with this “racist” image is bad for certain organizations, but not really any condemnation from the same people. It’s great for people to say that participating in an event with the NSM is a bad idea, it’s not so great for the same people to say the reason it’s bad is because it will hurt membership. Makes it look really disingenuous for certain people’s concern to lie solely in membership numbers and not in coming down on the side of condemnation of blatant hatred.
The NSM has denied the Kristallnacht connection, but there is some proof that exists that says that’s not true. These guys are Nazis and no one should be surprised by what Nazis think.

Now, I still find it hard to believe that Parrott is a straight up Nazi, but since the recent ventures of he and “Lonesome Rhodes” Heimbach, it appears that their judgements have become reckless.
And about Heimbach, unlike Parrott, I do believe that chubby “face in the crowd” IS a straight up Nazi.

No, it hasn’t. It’s *marketing* has shifted, but the focus (if the contextual meaning of that word in this instance is accurate) is as it always has been.
I spent too much time (and suffered too much harassment because I didn’t agree with one of their interpretations about a Civil War soldier) in the 90s dealing with the political agenda these people pursued under the guise of historical truth. Watching these re-branding attempts that seek to paint the LoSers as some organization full of well-meaning history buffs makes my bile flow.
