Just a note that Scott Hartwig, Supervisory Historian at Gettysburg National Military Park, retires today after decades of distinguished service to the American people.
Here’s Scott talking about Gettysburg on C-SPAN earlier this year. And here he is on C-SPAN talking about his work, A Killer Angels Companion, back in 1999.
To the left is Scott on his first day at work in 1979; to the right is Scott earlier today (courtesy Barbara J. Sanders):
Scott will now be able to devote more time to several projects, including the second of a two-volume study of the Maryland Campaign of 1862.
You can read what will become known as Hartwig’s Farewell Address here. It’s representative of the man: generous praise for others, the usual modesty, and a love for history from someone who left Gettysburg better for his presence.
