Birds of a Feather Flock Together … in Oxford, Mississippi

Well, as you might imagine, the Virginia Flaggers’ spin-off group, the Mid-South Flaggers, followed the usual formula of flagging protests yesterday.
Mid South OxfordThey drew a big crowd of supporters.

Mid South 3 They are committed to diversity and inclusion … kinda.

Mid South 2

H. K. Edgerton showed up.

Mid South 4

And guess who was watching?

Mid South 5

That’s right, more folks from the League of the South. Wonder what they think about the diversity and inclusion theme.

My understanding is that the mayor of Oxford is a bit peeved that the march disrupted a perfectly nice Saturday neighborhood function for families and kids.

I’m beginning to think Lexington and Oxford are interchangeable.

“Which side of town do you want your flag” ??

Now this might just be a miscommunication because I’m a Yankee. But when they say which side of town I’m assuming they are talking about the color line. And by your flag, well there aren’t any more Confederates, so do they mean the flag belongs to white Southerners? Maybe they mean all Southerners, maybe just people with confederate heritage?

I’m not certain, nor am I certain what side of town that group of people is supposed to want their flag.

  2. Spelunker August 10, 2014 / 6:22 am

Does anyone know if African American Confederate Heritage types like HK Edgerton realize they aren’t welcome in the new Dixie if Hill and Co. are successful? And yet there he is, hugging Brian Pace.

  3. Andrew Raker August 10, 2014 / 6:37 am

Even though I’ve read through the Chancellor’s plans a couple of times, I can’t figure out why they’re protesting. I guess they could have made signs that said “Confederate Avenue”, since that’s the only part that dealt with Confederate heritage.

But other than that, I can’t see why they were out in Oxford yesterday. Besides their desire for attention and martyrdom.

We agree that “diversity and inclusion” doesn’t apply to White Christian Southerners – obviously, that’s where the line is drawn – and we expected the response to that message would be scorn and derision.

The administration at Ole Miss is fine with every other group celebrating their culture and heritage. They don’t have any problem with non-Whites and immigrants nurturing a collective sense of racial identity in formal student unions. If you are descended from a Confederate soldier though, you are supposed to be ashamed of that. We alone are supposed to “progress” beyond honoring our ancestors.

That’s part of what we call The Standard which is anti-White, anti-Southern, and anti-Christian. “Diversity and inclusion” is just another way of saying we want to make this or that institution less White, less Southern, and less Christian, and the demise of that demographic is something that ought to be celebrated.

    • Jimmy Dick August 10, 2014 / 10:00 am

If you are descended from a Confederate soldier you do not have to be ashamed. Just admit they fought for the right to own other people, lost the war, and went on with their lives. If you choose to honor them by being racist, ignorant, and bigoted, then that is your choice. If you think you should celebrate your racial heritage by championing exclusion and racism that’s your choice. However, if you are cast out of the main body of America for your racist beliefs, then that is part of the choice you make.
As for the Christian part you are very mistaken. Christianity rejects racism. So if you are racist you are not Christian.

      • Hunter Wallace August 10, 2014 / 1:00 pm

1.) The term “racism” was popularized in the 1930s. Jesus Christ and the Church had nothing to say about “racism” until the twentieth century. Most Americans didn’t come to see “racism” as a moral problem until the 1950s.

2.) We fought for Southern independence. Even today, there are Southerners who don’t want to live under the same government as obnoxious, moralizing Yankees, and that has nothing to do with slavery.

3.) My ancestors were people who would be labeled “racists” these days. Of course even newborn infants meet the standard of “racism” as the term is used today.

4.) I enjoy being a White Christian Southerner, a minority, in a country whose popular culture is viciously anti-White, anti-Southern, and anti-Christian, but I would rather be a majority in our own country.

5.) I’m a champion of excluding people like you from the South. Why on earth should we live under the same government? Much of the rest of the world resents arrogant Yankee imperialists for the same reasons we do.

        • Jimmy Dick August 10, 2014 / 1:34 pm

You didn’t fight for anything. Our ancestors fought for the right to own human beings. They told us that.
If you do not like the US get the F*** out.
Jesus Christ did say something about LOVE. You don’t know anything about it because you are too filled with hate. Until you get rid of your hate you will be denied entry into the Kingdom of Heaven.
The rest of the world resents people like you because you are the type that creates the world’s problems. You do not know what the rest of the world thinks because you are unable to think outside of your narrow minded racist view point.

Again, leave. Go somewhere else. You are not going to recreate the Confederacy and you are not going to have any states secede.

We’re not anti-Christian. We’re anti-racist. We don’t like people who call themselves Christian while violating the Word of God. You are not Christian. You are being rejected by Christ and are on the road to Hell.

          • Andrew Raker August 10, 2014 / 2:33 pm

The White Christian Southerners I know actually do feel threatened. They feel threatened by White Nationalists who make their home state of Mississippi look like an embarrassment.

Thankfully, Hunter’s pictures of the LOS at the Confederate Monument at the University have reminded me of the bravery of Duncan Gray II, the grandfather of one of my friends, who was ripped down from that monument by rioting students in 1962, all as he tried to install calm in the crowd. Because, you know, rioting isn’t a Christian value.

        • Bob Huddleston August 11, 2014 / 9:29 am

” I enjoy being a White Christian Southerner, a minority, in a country whose popular culture is viciously anti-White, anti-Southern, and anti-Christian, but I would rather be a majority in our own country.” When you are part of a minority — and part of an increasingly smaller minority, either adjust and continue living there or move somewhere else.

      • L Buntin September 21, 2015 / 7:46 am

        Mr.Dick:

My Confederate ancestors who fought in the War between the States had no slaves, just like 97% of the population of my home
        state of Tennessee in 1860,
My decorated WWII Air Force veteran father
and granfather who was a Doughboy in WWI farmed the same farm their grandfathers cleared in 1840, only 18 years after the Madison county seat of Jackson was formed. Their grandparents fought in the Mexican war, the Seminole war and the American Revolution. .. to which the land was payment for their military services.
My family was at one point affiliated with Quakers until it came time to fight for the independence of this country.
So you want present day Southerners to admit to a false version of history? !
Why? Does it embarass you that we lost a just cause?
There is nothing wrong with objecting to tyranny.
You sir, are woefully misled like so many other ignorant Southerners about their own history. The Northern propaganda machine is quite slick and has worked hard for over a century and a half toward cultural genocide of the Southern people. You are just one of its many sad victims.
Are you a) product of the dumbed down public school system
        b) unable to respond to liberal inflicted white guilt
        c) descendant of scaliwag, carpetbagger or Yankee sleeze
        d) post war
        ignorant liberal or

        e)All of the above ????

If the answer is e, like I think it is, then no wonder your name is dick.

        • Jimmy Dick September 21, 2015 / 9:02 am

Study history and learn. The primary sources reject your opinion. There are no southern people, just Americans. If you don’t like the truth, then I suggest you continue to whine.

The lands your family were rewarded with were taken from Native Americans against their will. The percentage of people who owned slaves does not reflect the way slaves were used by whites, the extended kinships, or the way ownership was consolidated in that era. Your defense fails spectacularly thanks to modern research into the men who made up the armies of the confederacy and their own letters where they firmly stated the cause of the war was slavery.

As for a Northern propaganda machine that is nothing more than your imagination at work. Let’s face it, the lost cause lie has been propagated for 150 years. Say good bye to it because it is disappearing quickly.

There was no tyranny in 1860. You may say there was, but you can show no proof of any.

Can a blind person tell the difference between a black southern Christian and a white southern Christian?

  5. jarretr August 10, 2014 / 9:51 am

Man, H.K. Egerton sure gets around, doesn’t he? Do the various flagger groups pay for his transportation? If not, how does he manage to show up at every Rebel flag demo in the South?

      • Ira Berkowitz August 10, 2014 / 2:07 pm

        Wow!!

      • jarretr August 10, 2014 / 2:35 pm

So, if I read that website correctly, he basically makes a living trafficking in a-historical bullsh*t. How admirable.

      • Spelunker August 10, 2014 / 4:10 pm

So Edgerton’s just a high dollar prop?

Here’s what Scott Terry (America’s favorite CPAC crasher) had to say about the event:

“The old southerners did *not* see their black neighbors as social equals, and yet here we are, presumably, being asked to see our black neighbors (and participants in these rallies) as social equals”

I mean why would anyone be expected to see their Black neighbors as social equals?

        • Andy Hall August 10, 2014 / 8:34 pm

That’s the fee that Edgerton states on his website. I see no reason to doubt it, unless maybe because the same website claims also Southern Heritage 411 is a non-profit organization and that donations to it are tax-deductible, which is apparently not (as we say in the South), *true*.

          • Andrew Raker August 11, 2014 / 8:55 am

Well, this is also a guy who’s published emails accusing him of fraud on his web page.

      • L Buntin September 21, 2015 / 7:59 am

        Mr. Hall:

I know for fact there is no fee as large as what you claimed
        given to Mr.Eggerton.
Most of his expenses he covers himself or he gets by individuals who host him for lunch or dinner or maybe pay for his gas but nothing like your exaggerated claim.
He is a fine man, former head of NAACP in his home state of NCarolina and his son often accompanies him.
It takes a lot of courage to tell the truth sometimes, especially after such events as the death of Anthony Hearvy in Mississippi this past summer.
If you are one of his detractors, you simply dont know him.

        • Andy Hall September 21, 2015 / 8:14 am

Thanks for your comment. His website says his personal appearance fee is $20,000. I take him at his word on that.

      • Andrew Raker August 10, 2014 / 1:29 pm

So the Hummer’s why he charges more than the standard mileage rate.

  6. neukomment August 10, 2014 / 1:23 pm

To say your ancestors were Confederates is one thing. To say that 150 years later, you yourself are a Confederate is a much different thing. The Confederates fired on our flag and in doing so committed an act of rebellion and (technically) treason precipitating The War to End the Rebellion. To say 150 years later you are a “Confederate” is, intended or not, to advocate a stance of rebellion and treason against the Constitutional government of the United States of America. Treason by definition IS excluded from the institutions of any country’s society. So “No!”. Institutional inclusiveness does not demand the formal recognition of your self identity as a “Confederate”.. Odd it is that you have a right, guaranteed by the very Constitution you have set yourself against, to your own opinion. That does not mean that the institutions of our country’s society are obligated to respect or honor that opinion.

    • L Buntin September 21, 2015 / 8:55 am

I am a proud Descendant of American Veterans!
My father, grandfather, his granfather, and back six generations to the American Revolution.
Since when did any one of these veterans lack recognition by the US government?
      You are the one mistaken.
      Provacation to start a war,
does not necessarily start by the firing of a gun, as in this case. Lying about the re-supply of a state owned fortification does.
Every effort was made to peacefully secede, which was understood to be legal at the time.
If it wasnt, then where is the justification for the secession of West Virginia?
New York City Mayor Fernando Wood supported the South and threatened to secede from the State of NY.
West Florida had seceded to form its own Republic at one time.
You are not much of a student of history if you think the overbearing Lincoln administration had a clue about negotiating for a peaceful resolution to the horrible imbalance of tax re-distribution or knew anything about the institution of slavery except from his own wife’s slaves.
      He was a racist til
the end, proposing to a group of free as well as recently freed slaves that they would be better off deported back to Africa and set up and supported Liberia to do so.
Sounds like you only repeat the selected portions of history you prefer to propagate to continue the Yankee myth that has always tried to degrade Southerners. You are jealous, you have always been jeolous and you cant get over it….you continue to spread your divisivness because it is a cultural trait of your kind to be condescending and arrogant by nature.
That is all I will say to you and those like you for to do anything else should be likened to argueing with a two year old who also is ignorant of history and just wants their way, no matter what.
You are rude and we long ago accepted you as such, tried to ignore you, tried to get away from your awful condemning un Christian spirit ( called Puritanism), the same people who hypcritically enslaved the Peqout indians in thNew England area then have the nerve to blame the South for national sins…your big fat Yankee mouth spews forth the most vile contradictions then expects us to sit by and ” admit” we had a part in it?!?!
      YOU started slavery…..
YOU twist the slavery narrative to your advantage and then expect Descendants of Confederate veterans to be ashamed….of what….??? That we once aligned ourselves with liars, plagerists, bummers, murderes and rapists who 150 years later still expect us to cowtow to your blather….
You should be ashamed of yourself for writing inflamatory nonsense!

    • L Buntin September 21, 2015 / 9:02 am

And dont forget….aside from the Native Americans, no other culture but Southern Americans have been forced to be American at the point of a bayonet.
Yankees are very good at one thing and one thing only…..COERSION!!!

    • L Buntin September 21, 2015 / 9:11 am

We dont ask that you honor our opinion of ourselves because we still dont care what you think.
I for one, have one regret ……..that my ancestor wasnt a better shot.

      • Andy Hall September 21, 2015 / 12:32 pm

. . . because we still dont care what you think.

You sure seem to. Just sayin’.

Caldwell or George alias? The style is similar.

      • Jimmy Dick September 21, 2015 / 1:25 pm

Enjoy being on the wrong side of history. If you don’t want to live here in my country, you have the option to leave.

  7. Michael Rodgers August 10, 2014 / 2:23 pm

Flock is way too numerous an implied count. Here’s a better title: Several Southern Nationalists and Confederate Flaggers Went for a Walk.

  8. TF Smith August 10, 2014 / 3:55 pm

I count a flock of 28 in the first photo, so about the size of the average grade school class.

I think the Republic and the Union will endure…

    Regards

It’s interesting to note Ben Jones’ silence on the participation of White Nationalists twice in a month in events predominantly led by the SCV (Lexington and Oxford), despite one League members attacks on the SCV and Jones himself.

    SPLC Article on Oxford

    The silence is deafening.

    • Brooks D. Simpson August 13, 2014 / 9:02 am

Ben’s spending his time here insulting people with whom he disagrees and claiming they’ve said things they’ve never said. Then again, he did serve in Congress.

“Hunter Wallace”, aka Brad Griffin, is a seriously disturbed individual on the fringe of the fringe of the fringe. If you read his blog he actually is essentially a neo-Confederate/neo-Monarchist. This indicates a profondly confused state of mind. The Confederacy and the Old South he is so enamored of was always very much opposed to strong central authority (this was the essence of the emphasis on ” states rights!”). As such, someone who simultaneously advocates a ressurection of the Confederacy and monarchy is operating with far less than 52 cards.

He’s also very much a racist and anti-semite.

He’s been quite critical of Christianity in the past which suggestss his current publicnembrace of Christanity is more a cynical pose of convenience than an indication of genuinely held beliefs (kinda hard to appeal to Bible Belt rednecks if you’re critical of Christianity). As Middle Easterners and ethnic Jews, neither Jesus Christ nor any of his apostles would be welcome in the resurrected Confederacy Griffin imagines.

I personally don’t think ethnocentrism is a good thing no matter who is doing it, be they black, white, Asian or what have you. But here Griffin continues to exhibit his considerable confusion, since “Southerner” is neither an ethnic group nor a race. I’ve seen where neo-Confederates make awkward stabs at suggesting that Southerners represent a ‘people’ or ethnic group by pointing to the large percentage of Scots-Irish in the southeast. But they will never actually identify as “Scots-Irish Nationalists” in part because they know there are too many white southerners who are not Scots-Irish. They seem to have an identity crisis.

Neoconfederates seem to be in essence what you might call “nostalgic racists”, driven as much by racism as by a belief in an idealized vision of the old south as a place where people of similar ethnic backgrounds walked around barefoot exchanging pleasantries with fiahing poles over their shoulders.

Finally, Griffin seems to think that there is great power to this idea that racism only came to be seen as a moral issue in the 1950s. Even if we assume this is true, the fact that a sentiment is relatively recent doesn’t have any bearing on its truth or falsity. Nevertheless he makes this statement frequently and obviously imagines it to be a persuasive argument that racism isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

He’s every bit as eccentric as HK Edgerton but is of course oblivious to his own fundamental weirdness. I wonder who he imagines wouold be King of the ressurected confederacy?

  11. Randy January 16, 2016 / 10:50 pm

LOL…I bet Yankees have no idea why all the statues of Miss Liberty are mounted atop Southern Court House face the South. That is so all Yankees can kiss her ass..;o)
