Discussion at Danville

You can watch the proceedings at Danville’s City Council last night (October 21) and on October 9 here.

Things pick up on the October 21 meeting just after the 39:30 minute mark. The comments on the October 9 meeting start with the discussion of the display of the Third National Flag, and some of the same people speak in both places.

You’ll note some familiar faces in the crowd (what, no sunglasses?). Indeed, one of them forwarded this link to the blog. Remember that the next time they deny visiting the blog.

Someone’s already forecast how this will turn out. Check.

UPDATE: And this is how it all turned out … thanks to someone from Boston (well, kinda).

The flag supporters were a strange mix at tonight’s Council meeting. One local supporter went off the rails by invoking Godwin’s Law, and Glen Scearce’s rambling, boring speech totally destroyed what momentum that was developing for the cause. To have any chance at stopping this from happening, the flag supporters are going to need at least 75% local people speaking for their cause and the outsiders have got to be dressed nicely and speak concisely.

Confederate Heritage arguments are often like that — multifacted, cliched appeals to emotion rather than making a simple and direct case that’s compelling to those not already on board with the cause.

I’d be interested to know how many people who spoke in support of keeping the flag were from Danville, and how many from out of town (or state). When Lexington went through a similar process three years ago, almost all of the flag supporters were people who didn’t actually live in Lexington.

The circular logic they use is astounding.

Are we gonna be the Hitluh’s, the Stawlin’s, the Mousy Tongue’s?

Is there a cool tat for the Mousy Tongue’s?

Two people read S. D. Lee’s charge to the SCV at one meeting. I guess they don’t listen to each other. Anyway, that charge contains what we need to know about the SCV. Their mission isn’t to deliver accurate history but rather to “vindicate” and “defend” the confederates. In order to do so they have to jettison logic, truth, and facts and instead rely on fabrications about history, circular logic, and utter nonsense in their appeals to emotions instead of reason.

Interesting. I guess the Georgia SCV did not feel as strongly about the Georgia code which protected veterans. The GA SCV dropped the flag case against the city of Ringgold.

Game over. Andy Hall, Al Mackey, SouthsideCentral, C. Meyer go sit down.

I’m sorry, a game was being played? Maybe you see things as a game, but the rest of us live in the adult world.

Only until a bad state law is repealed or Danville rips the flag down, goes to court, and gets the law rejected as unconstitutional.
