Court actions…? I haven’t heard about any court actions. Is Ben playing fast n loose?

They talk a lot more about lawsuits than they actually follow through with, but there have been some cases. They challenged the flag ordinance in Lexington and lost spectacularly, just as Susan Hathaway suggested they would at the time the ordinance passed. The odious Kirk Lyons dragged out that case in South Carolina about the kid with the CBF shirt who got suspended from school, for years after she graduated, stole a bunch of guns from someone’s house and went to prison.

On the other hand, they probably will ultimately win the SCV license plate case here in Texas. And they are now actively soliciting money — they’re always soliciting money — to take some sort of legal action to block the reorganization of the Museum of the Confederacy. For reasons I’ve discussed on my blog, I don’t see that one going anywhere.

I liked the commercial for light bulbs by what’s-his-name.

The notion that a “cabal” is engaging in a concerted effort to destroy Confederate heritage is laughable. I feel sorry for people like this who clearly have a very tenuous grasp on reality.

So, what is a “direct descendant?” Is it possible to be an indirect descendant?

    • Andy Hall November 13, 2014 / 9:21 am

Direct (or lineal) descendant, as opposed to collateral descendant. One is a direct descendant of parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. Aunts, uncles, and cousins are collateral ancestors.

I don’t know why Jones says the SCV are direct descendants of Confederate veterans, since that group’s own website says explicitly that both direct/lineal and collateral descendants are eligible for membership. That’s a pretty basic fact about the organization that he really ought to know if he’s going to speak on their behalf.

      • Andy Hall November 13, 2014 / 9:35 am

Should have added — collateral relatives are those with whom one shares a common ancestor.

      • tmheaney November 13, 2014 / 9:59 am

Thanks, Andy. So, by “direct descendant” he means “descendant,” since while aunts and uncles are “relatives” or “collateral descendants” no one can actually be a “descendant” of one’s uncle or cousin. [Insert ‘relative’ joke here.]

So, Ben’s rhetorical move here is mainly puffery, right?

Uh, yes, strictly speaking one is not descended from collateral relatives.

But SCV membership (per their website) is not limited to direct/lineal descendants, so Jones’ addressing SCV members as direct/lineal descendants is odd.

Maybe he doesn’t understand his own membership, or maybe he wants to narrow it.

        • Andy Hall November 13, 2014 / 12:52 pm

And really, it’s mostly all the same cliched rhetoric that’s been circling for years and years. Jones has not brought any new ideas or arguments to the table that I’ve seen.

This seems to be the public face of it. Goodness knows he had the chance to pursue a different path.

frankly, I can see his point. And for the sake of historical preservation and to keep history alive so that the mistakes of the past can be learned from we need guys like him to remind usthere are those who believe that the South should rise again. On a serious note I say ignore him he’s just blowing wind in a paper bag. and it gets him attention.

Let’s see. The first line is wrong. The United States Army has been the most courageous and steadfast Army in our history, but what do you expect from someone who worships his ancestors? How much money did they lose from their awesome leader who went to prison for stealing funds? If anything, this is nothing but a letter begging money from its limited membership because the organization is no longer relevant in America today. It is based upon a false version of history and given a charge to lie to Americans in order to perpetuate an outright lie.

Let the organization collapse like it deserves to do along with the myths it protects.
