On April 2, 1865, the Army of the Potomac launched a major attack upon the Confederate fortifications at Petersburg. The heaviest fighting took place at Fort Gregg, a prominent Confederate position.
One of the most notable characteristics of a Kurz and Allison print is how well dressed both sides are. Look at the Confederates in regulation attire. Very snappy. Everything is so neat and clean.
On April 1, 1865, Union forces under Phil Sheridan crushed George Pickett’s Confederate defending the road junction known as Five Forks, striking the blow that would force Robert E. Lee to evacuate Richmond and Petersburg.
Note especially the prevalence of Yankees fans in parts of the former Confederacy.
Over the next nine days Americans in general and Virginians in particular will have cause to celebrate and commemorate one of the most important events in American history.
