The Sage Historian Comments: The Conventions and the Election Outlook

For those of you who want to know what a “presidential historian” does during an election year, you can start here.

Note that both the Republican and Democratic commenters turned to me as a source of information. None of this tripe about the leftist academy from people who know what they are talking about. If anything, the Republican was somewhat happier with what I said than was the Democrat.

My brother has a similar gig as a real-time analyst on Des Moines TV on Election nights.

That was one of the more civil discussions on the presidential election I’ve seen in a while.
I concur with your opinion that this thing is far from over.

At minute 22:45, the truth of this election was spoken: “A lot of people are not voting for somebody, they are voting against somebody” Instead of looking for positive attributes in the candidates, everyone is digging for dirt (in one case, one does not have to look hard at all, in the other, self-sabotage does the trick) It’s like watching a Ping-Pong game up close: Head and eyes swinging back and forth to follow the ball. That old saying “One screw-up cancels 20 attaboys” keeps the polls a mess. So nice that nobody was screaming at each other like my last conversation on the topic of the election……

  4. When I first saw this, I mistook the host of the show for the guest Professor Simpson as he and Mr. Cardenas look a lot alike if you just look at the avatar here and see the still of the show’s host in thoughtful repose. Professor Simpson — you look a lot younger in that show than your evident expertise suggests.

It appears that young’uns are on both sides of the professorial podium these days!

For the record, I am 55 years old.
