Most fair-minded people would agree that Hillary Clinton was wrong when she claimed that half of Donald J. Trump’s supporters were “a basket of deplorables.” That claim painted with too broad a brush that tarred too many people.
That said, it is true that some of Trump’s supporters are truly deplorable, especially those who have been associated with what one Pensacola blogger claimed was the future of Confederate heritage … the Virginia Flaggers.
Susan Hathaway supports Trump. Connie Chastain supports Trump. Matthew Heimbach, once a Flagger darling, has actually attacked protesters at a Trump rally.
Chastain’s political views, indeed, appear to be straight out of the Trump playbook.
We’ve seen Confederate flags at Trump rallies, which does little to promote the notion that either the Trump campaign or Confederate heritage is especially tolerant. For Trump supporters outside “the basket,” it’s an unfortunate association.
And then came Friday’s revelation of a video, some eleven years old, of Trump and television program host Billy Bush making crude and lewd comments about women.
Guess who came out swinging for Trump? That’s right, Connie Chastain. Given her obsession with the notion of false rape accusations … a theme that has shaped several of her works of fiction … one might well expect that she would shrug off Trump’s crass talk that smacked of sexual assault and rape. And so she did (check the comments section … where Chastain posts under her own name as well as the name “Polly Graff”).
So much for southern womanhood. We recall that Susan Hathaway once said that Chastain did her “heavy hitting.” Now we have a better idea of what that means.

we’re among the first alarm bells for me. I specifically remember thinking that the fact that they rallied behind someone cannot be a good thing…

Of course they support a cretin like Trump who is also willing to tear the nation apart to get what he wants regardless of how awful he looks doing it.
I love it when she and the rest of the Trumpites scream that they are not racist and that Hillary Clinton and everyone on the left are racists. There is only one response to that line of thought. “If Hillary is so racist, why are all the white supremacists and openly racist groups in the US supporting Donald Trump?”
KKKonnie is just squawking as loud as she can because her anointed one is losing the election. All she can do is whine about the sky falling because that is all she knows how to do. She is the classic conservative, scared to lose their white privilege, terrified that they have to be equal to black people as well as any other race, angry that their version of Christianity is being rejected by Christians who are inclusive of all people including the LGBT community, and mad as hell that the lies of the Lost Cause have been exposed as white supremacist mythology.
Too bad for her and the rest of her ilk. Good riddance to them too!
It seems perfectly logical that these folks would stick it out with Trump — especially in light of recent revelations. A quick run-down of Flaggers rap sheets/charges/pending trials includes: rape, child porn x2, kidnapping, assault…Did I miss anything?
Anyhow, with fine upstanding citizens such as this making up the ranks of the Flaggers, one would think that they would be offering ‘ol Donny Boy an honorary membership. They can have one big gab-fest regarding their “experience”.

Absolutely! I did not know about that one.
Actually, I erred. Cliff Troutman, who was a highly celebrated member of the Virginia Flaggers early on, was not on probation for assault and battery at the time he was with them at the VMFA. He had been convicted on that charge, but appealed and the state declined to go forward, so it appears to me that that conviction (and the sentence) was thereby vacated. I apologize for posting inaccurate information initially.
He did, however, have a conviction for arson from many years before to which he pled guilty. He got a 10 year sentence for that, with seven years suspended, to be followed by supervised probation.
Troutman is by no means the worst of the lot, but the Virginia Flaggers, like the Confederate Heritage movement, do seem to have more than their share of fuckups and misfits.
Wasn’t there a trespassing charge that ended up in a plea with a certain Virginia Flagger who claims (the court disagrees) that he was verbally assaulted because he was a Trump supporter?
